Character Analysis of Augustus Waters

Have you ever been particularly impressed by a character after reading a movie or book? The characterization, symbolism and conflict of a character in a story to help readers better understand the character which also contributes to highlight the character image, and specifically here is Augustus. First, when you want to analyze a character, the most important thing is the characterization of the character, and this is also the point that makes readers easily visualize out of the picture, and the character’s personality. According to John Green’s book  » The Fault in our Starts,  » « he is the main character in the classic book « The Fault in our Starts, » which is also an inspiring character and left a strong impression on the readers of the book. In appearance he is described by Hazel as a tall but bad posture and his right leg has been replaced with prosthetic due to his osteosarcoma. Moreover, he has blue eyes, mahogany hair and a crooked smile as well as a warm and seductive voice. He impresses people with his cuteness, charm and intelligence. In addition, he is a basketball talent, and he has achieved many trophies for this subject ». In terms of relationship, he fell in love with Hazel during his first meeting in the Support Group and he had a close friend named Isaac. Not only that, his story revolves around other characters like Peter Van Houten, his father and mother. Next, the symbol is also one of the representatives to enhance the more specific characteristics in the character’s personality and thinking. Gus’s symbolic item was a cigarette, and he considered it a metaphor as if he had just stuck a cigarette in the middle of his teeth but did not burn it, and it was a metaphor. He said « They don’t kill you unless you light them »(20) he explains to put the killer in his mouth but didn’t allow it to kill him, it symbolized his cancer control. Through the image of a cigarette we can see that he loves metaphors and he seeks metaphors to create interesting things in his life. Also, one thing that stands out to Gus is his symbolic. When Isaac broke up with Monica and arrived at Gus’s house, Gus said “Dude, pillows don’t break. Try something that breaks”(62) ,so he broke the trophies at the request of Augustus. As his explanation, he said “I’ve been looking for a way to tell my father that I actually sort of hate basketball, and I think we’ve found it”(62), his father wanted him to play basketball, not his favourite sport, and Gus wanted Isaac to smash the trophies to confirm that he wanted to control his life. In the end, the conflicts will make the character stronger with his character and it also contributes to making the story more dramatic. According to John Green ‘s book  » The Fault in Our Starts , » writer writes “I fear oblivion,” he said without a moment’s pause. “I fear it like the proverbial blind man who’s afraid of the dark”(12). He is afraid of being forgotten, so he wants to make a mark on the world. That’s why, he hated the idea that he could not leave any mark, so he wanted to become a person who is still remembered by many when he dies. This is probably because he knows he has cancer, so his fear for it is so much stronger. it was when he shared his fear with everyone in The Support Group that he had a conflict with Hazel. When he read he would fear being forgotten, Hazel said « when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human remaining remaining to remember that anyone ever repeated or that our species ever did anything There will be no one left to remember Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. « (13). Although this was not really a conflict, it was the first time Gus and Hazel talked and shared about a problem. Moreover, the conflict was most evident when he was preparing to go with Hazel to Amsterdam, and before he left he had a conflict with his mother, as John Green wrote « I could hear someone crying inside. I did not think it was Gus at first, because it didn’t sound anything like the low rumble of his speaking, but then I heard a voice that was definitely a twisted version of his say, « BECAUSE IT IS MY LIFE, MOM. IT BELONGS TO ME. ” « (139). In addition to external conflicts, the main characters are often described clearly and carefully by internal conflicts. In addition to external conflicts, the main characters are often described clearly and thoroughly by internal conflicts. Typically here is his cancer, a 17-year-old man with bone cancer lost his leg. Perhaps he struggled a lot to overcome moments of helplessness with his own illness, and turned back into a cute and witty guy. Not only that, his wit and empathy helped Hazel to be more open to everyday life, even though she had previously thought and things that were not optimistic, and loved life. Namesake is also one of the interesting things in this character, because his name coincides with the Roman king (Augustus). This is considered one of the noble titles in the Roman Empire, and it also means « majesty » or « reverence » in Latin. He also want to be like the first Roman emperor, leaving his life with great accomplishments so that people will always remember and never forget his name. In short, John Green portrayed Augustus’ character is a diverse character with many personalities in every situation, and that has made him leave a deep impression in the minds of every reader of the book « The Fault in Our Starts ».

Quick Write: Anne Frank House

Have you ever heard of Anne Frank House? If anyone has ever read the  » The Fault in Our Starts  » book, you will probably know this special house. I have many friends who have read  » The Fault in Our Starts  » and they are so impressed with the story associated with Anne Frank House that they find all the information about the story of that house. Anne Frank House is where Anne Frank wrote his diary and this place was founded in 1957 after the war by the organization Anne Frank House. Initially, the site was intended to preserve the sanctuary, which was later restored and opened to the public in 1960. Today, Anne Frank House is seen and a museum and preserves a lot of Dutch information in Holocaust genocide. In the story « The Fault in Our Starts » during Hazel’s visit to Anne Frank House, when she reads a book with names of people from the Netherlands in the Holocaust, and she sees Anne Frank’s name and 4 people named Aron Frank. If Anne Frank is remembered by many for her dedication in the diary of the days on The Secret Annex, then four people named Aron Frank did not have any souvenirs, historical records and no one mourned them, so she told herself that she would remember and pray for them while she was alive (201). Hazel’s actions show her sympathy for the four people named Aron Frank. Although they had experienced the same situation as Anne, no one remembered after their death. Hazel could feel that after she died, she would be like those four people, and maybe no one would remember her. If Hazel were like four people named Aron Frank, then Augustus would be Anne. Because he doesn’t want to be forgotten after he dies, he wants to create a seal so people always remember him when he dies. Therefore, Anne’s story is one of the special highlights and is associated with the relationship of Augustus and Hazel. Moreover, the story makes us think more between Augustus and Anne, who did not want a normal life to be forgotten.

Quick Write: Existentialism

Are you impressed somewhere after reading a book? After reading the book « The Fault in Our Starts » and listening to the teacher’s lectures, I was impressed by the swimming city of Amsterdam, which is said to be a city of freedom and sin. It is famous for its excessive freedom and that freedom itself creates sin. According to John Green’s book « The Fault in Our Stars » « When the taxi driver said Amsterdam was like a tree ring, the more we walked into the center, the more classic it was and on another page Hazel said it was reckless when her mother let a 16-year-old daughter go with a boy 17-year-old in a city of freedom  » (156/159). So those two sentences are relevant and Hazel’s mom’s decision is just a reckless or some other reason. The children are thought to be mature at 18 and there are many places that are 19, but Hazel is only 16 and Augustus is only 17 but they can hang out together in a city deemed free and guilty. Perhaps due to the classic of the city makes children even younger but makes them more mature, helping them grow bigger when they come to this city, and that’s part of the reason for the outing between Hazel and Gus. On the other hand, the main reason for that decision lies in Hazel’s illness, because of that disease, she has something more special than everyone else such as a haft of birthday and more specifically here is more freedom. normal person. When it comes to freedom and sin, I think of existentialism in which individuals are free and responsible for their own decisions. With many comments I read from the book, Augustus is said to be an existentialism. Some stories in the story make it clear that before he left Amsterdam, he said « because it is my life, mom. It belongs to me » (139), he wants to decide for himself whether it is wrong or right, he affirms his life with his mother who gave him life. He controlled life to death, he knew what he needed when he died like buying a piece of land in a cemetery and making a beautiful outfit for his funeral. even the title of the book speaks to the existentialism « The Fault in Our Starts », the sin mentioned in the title of the book was not due to someone or something written, It is our decision that we make. The summary of existentialism is best expressed through the actions, decisions and words of Augustus.

I recently read a book called  » The Fault in Our Starts  » by John Green, in which there are many characters like Hazel and Augustus who is the main characters, Isaac and Monica. In addition to the story of the two main characters, the story of Isaac and Monica also gets a lot of attention. Isaac and Monica love each other deeply and they always say their love is « always », but when Isaac is blind, Monica broke up with Isaac even though the two were very happy with each other before. Although Monica only appeared once in the story, she was mentioned many times by Augustus, and Hazel. According to John Green’s book « The Fault in Our Starts, » Hazel said « To be fair to Monica / what you did to her wasn’t very nice either » [135]. Hazel still finds the real reason for the breakup between Isaac and Monica. Hazel’s jokes with Isaac have shown us Hazel is well aware of her illness. She sensed the horrors of cancer and limited contact with many people to avoid causing damage to those around her. Especially to Augustus, he was a special person to her, she didn’t want him to suffer any further damage, so she limited contact with him, did not dare to meet and talk to him. However then she felt that she could not get people out of her life, especially Augustus, so she tried to stay healthy because she thought it was the best way to avoid harming Augustus and the others love her.
