Daughter
Hazel had a completely different change about Mr. Van Houten after hearing him tell the story of his daughter. Van Houten was previously an idol of Hazel after she read » An Imperial Affliction « , but on her trip to Amsterdam, she thought he was in a bad way, an alcoholic and a bad temper. Van Houten’s » An Imperial Affliction » is a special book for Hazel and she appreciates and loves it. She felt the harmony of her life with this book so much that she said « the author, Peter Van Houten, seemed to understand me in weird and impossible ways. AIA was my book, in the way my body was my body and my thoughts were my thoughts » (34). For a patient like her, she felt that no one understood her life and ideals but until she read of Van Houten’s book » An Imperial Affliction « , and it seemed to her that there was still the one who understands everything about her is Van Houten. Moreover, she considered the book as a special Bible and dedicated to her life. She shared » Peter Van Houten, the reclusive author of An Imperial Affliction, the book was as close a thing as I had to a Bible. Peter Van Houten was only person I’d ever come across who seemed to understand what it’s like to be dying, and not have died » (13). In addition, this book is an incomplete book, she guesses that the main character of the book is dead and the story ends midway, however that is one of her favourite things in this book. She said that « that’s part of what I like about the book in some ways. It portrays death truthfully. You die in the middle of your life, in the middle of sentence » (67). She loved the book very much and admired its author, but he let her down in a reality meeting. However, the last time Van Houten met her after Augustus’s death and he shared his daughter’s story which completely changed her way of thinking and attitude towards him. He shared with her that « my daughter, she was eight. Suffered beautifully. Will never be beatified » and « she had leukemia, like Anna, very much like her » (285). This is probably the reason why a talented writer and a career lover becomes an alcoholic, a strange and rude character. She felt sympathetic to him and understood why he had become making her think of her parents. Therefore, she was like wondering what they would look like when she died. She felt worried that they would be like Van Houten who would turn into a different person and they would not be the same as before because of her death. His daughter’s story touched her heart.

Hazel Cares
Featured in Hazel’s personality is that she is always associated with the fear of hurting those around her with her death and especially with her parents. In my opinion, the biggest fear for people is not death, but they are afraid of hurting those they love. Specifically, Hazel is a teenage girl with cancer, she can not control her life because of the evil disease so she can die at any time. For that reason she said « I’m like. Like. I’m like a grenade, Mom. I’m a grenade and at some point I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties » (99). She felt like a grenade and when she died as well as when the grenade exploded, and it would cause great damage to everything around. Moreover, she always knew that her parents were there to take care of her and if she died, they would be the most miserable and probably they could not return to normal life. In addition, they are also the closest people in her life and she does not want them to be hurt in any way, especially the suffering of her death. Because of that, she also asked her parents what they would be like if she died, because she wanted their lives to be normal, and they would always live happily together even when she died. On the other hand, near the end of the Hazel story that changed the way she thought, she felt like making a grenade, because she realized that she couldn’t protect people from being hurt by her death. She said, « I loved a grenade đi I understand the foolishness of trying to save others from my own impending fragmentation » (214). She couldn’t stop interacting with people, and she couldn’t stop loving them, so she was no longer afraid of being like a grenade she accepted and liked it. At the end of the story, she asked her parents about what they would look like after her death, after which her parents answered that they would still be together and they had prepared what they needed if she didn’t. also with them. Because of her parents’ answers, she also felt happy and like seeing a future that wasn’t too dark if she died. Finally in the letter Augustus wrote about Hazel, in which he wrote a sentence that « You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes hers » and she answered « I do » (313). From Gus’s words and Hazel’s « I do » statement that once again confirms that she no longer worries and feels bad about making a grenade because she has so many people who always care and love her. I believe that she is very happy with her current life even though she has a terrible disease, because she is always cared for and loved by people around her.

Symbol of Oxygen Tank
The oxygen tank is one of the things attached to the character Hazel in the book « The Fault in Our Starts », and it also contributed a lot to the development of this character. According to John Green’s book « The Fault in Our Starts, » « Hazel is the protagonist of the story and she has end-stage thyroid cancer, so the oxygen tank helps her during her treatment ». In many episodes, oxygen tank have greatly contributed to the manifestation of her illness, and many readers think that it is the embodiment of her lungs. Her thyroid cancer made it hard for her to breathe, and she could not breathe like normal people, so « an oxygen-tank helps her breath, she can’t take it out » (46). Hazel has two oxygen tanks which is Philip and BiPAP, and they both help her breathe. as she described about Philip is a « rectangular oxygen concentrator, which called Philip, because it just kind of looked like a Philip (39) », and she always carries it with her wherever she goes. she described Philip very clearly in a situation like this, when she went to the park and had a child ask her « What’s in your nose?, » (46) and she answered « it’s called a cannuala. These tubes give me oxygen and help me breathe « (46). Therefor from there we see Philip has a tube connected to her nose, and that’s how she got oxygen to her. moreover she described Philip’s mechanism of action as « The portable tank delivers two litters of oxygen to Hazel each minute » (8), and « the portable tank usually takes six hours to run out of oxygen » (158). Apart from Philip, she has another device that is BiPAP, and it is bigger and more bulky than Philip so she cannot carry BiPAP with her. BiPAP has the same effect as Philip « the BiPAP essentially took control of her breathing away from me (119) ». They are really necessary for her because she needs enough oxygen to breathe and sustain life « with my BiPAP machine, an oxygen concentrator, and a dozen refillable oxygen tanks at the foot of the bed (157) » and when she had a conflict with her parents she removed the BiPAP and after a while she could not breathe « the cannula, » i whined « i need it »(255). Moreover, she discovered BiPAP made a very interesting sound « BiPAP sounded like a dragon breathing in time with me, like I had pet dragon who was cuddled up next to me (120) ». Hazel personified the sounds of BiPAP into the voice of a dragon, and it was also an interesting episode of the oxygen tank. we can see that both Philip and BiPAP are very important and inseparable things for her, because « Without the machines she feel like her lungs were folding in upon themselves like flowers at dusk (141) ». we can say in other words, two machines such as Hazel’s everyday objects, they help her to live and it is extending her life, or we can understand that it is the hero of her illness. In the book Hazel not only describes the form of use, and tells the stories of two oxygen tanks, but she also shares her feelings about them. Because of her illness, she has very little contact with many people around her, so Hazel has very few friends and she sees Philip and BiPAP as her friends, things that are inseparable from her in life. In the absence of them she felt very lost like losing her close friends « When Hazel walk through the x ray without oxygen. The machines’s silence acknowledging that I was, however briefly, a nonmetallicized creature (141) » .However, because of Philip’s entanglement, sometimes she felt uncomfortable with it, she also wanted to be as free as everyone else, not being wrapped around wires such as At the airport Hazel must disengage her oxygen tank in order to pass through security » She describes feeling a certain freedom being without it momentarily (page 141) ». In addition, what she felt most uncomfortable was because they seemed to denounce her condition, which made people clearly see her and others’ difference « the physical evidence of disease separates you from other people (144) » and « cannula is symbol of her cancer I think, when stewardess sees that, she gives them champagne (220) ». In addition to her appearance and personality, the oxygen tank is a symbol in the construction of her character image, the oxygen tank also appears quite a lot in the story, and through that it helps readers understand Hazel better.

« Poem #XXII » « The Red Wheelbarrow »
According to John Green’ s book « The Fault in Our Starts, » Hazel created the poem that » so much depends upon, a blue sky cut open by the branches of the trees above, upon the transparent G-tube erupting from the gut of the blue-lipped boy, upon this observer of universe » (247). This is the poem she composed herself when she brought Augustus to the hospital, and we can see it is similar to the poem « The Red Wheelbarrow » by William Carlos Williams « . Both poems begin with the verse of « so much depends on », the opening poem makes the reader feel vague but also feels it is a poem full of symbolic images and very special. Through the opening sentence makes every reader think that the images in the next verse will be very symbolic and valuable because it is « so much depends on ». However, in the poem « The Red Wheelbarrow », it opens up very simple images of everyday life, especially in rural areas. Images such as red wheel barrow, rainwater and white chickens are very simple images and can be easily found in gardens. The image of a red wheelbarrow as a metaphor for something very special, the poet used a simple image to describe a special feature, which further made the red wheel barrow becomes very unique. Moreover, on the next wheelbarrow line enamelled with rainwater, we feel that the vehicle has been transformed by a different material, and this rain makes the wheelbarrow different from the beginning. In the last verse, the image of the white chickens shows another image in the garden. Wheelbarrows after the rain change are not the same as they were at first, but the white chickens are normal and they seem to be unrelated to wheelbarrows and rain. Hazel composed the poem herself with images close to a poem in the XXII century, perhaps feeling the similarity of what she is seeing now with the image in an old poem. The image « a blue sky cut open by the branches of the trees above » is similar to the wheelbarrow image, it is also a common image in life without other impacts. I felt that the image of the sky and branches symbolized simplicity and peace in everyday life. Hazel’s second verse « the transparent G-tube erupting from the gut of the blue-lipped boy » corresponds to the « rainwater » of the old poem, as if it represents an event that occurred in life. Daily peace is gone, but instead is a difficult change in life, maybe she is thinking of the image of Augustus fighting his illness. After the images of peace, experiencing problems and finally she created a verse, « this observer of universe ». She opened up a wider picture that is the universe, an endless thing that includes everything in the world. Observer of universe and the white chickens seemed to be the same, they witnessed everything but they couldn’t interfere with them. They can only watch it change whether it changes in the positive or the negative. The two poems seem to convey the same message that life is so diverse and colourful, it does not depend on a fixed thing but it is influenced by many things around us. The earth still rotates according to its rules, so everything in life goes on and no one can stand still before changes in the universe.

Quick Write Rememberer
Memory is an indispensable part of every person, and we will often remember the things which we once experienced, whether it was a memorable moment or a dark memory. Moreover, each person will have their own ways to store memories such as taking photos, sharing moods on personal pages, chatting with diaries or they will share those moments with a person who they trust. In my opinion, I have two ways to keep my memories as to write everything I experience in a diary day and share my memories with my mother. However, when I said that I confided everything to my mother, many people were surprised by this. This is one of the ways people rarely use it, because the generation difference will make every child feel uncomfortable when they talk to family. They always feel disagree with adults in the family, especially about education and affection. But for me, whenever I confide in my mother, whatever the problem is, she will listen and understand for me. Not only that, my mother was also very good at giving advice and that helped me solve all problems in a mature way. I feel that advice from people who have a lot of experience in life will help us easily see and solve problems smoothly without unnecessary conflicts. I believe that the person who nurtures and educates me will be the one who understands and accepts my everything whether I succeed or fail. Of course there will be times when we have different ideas, and that’s inevitable. At that time, my mother would analyze what she thought about this issue, and I would give my own opinion. We will then combine the two ideas harmoniously to create the best way to solve the problem. I often share everything with my mom about studying, friends and interesting memories in life. At the same time, she will tell me about things at work and her friends. Especially now when we’re not together, but I still talk to Mom every day. moreover, I can know what a day in my family is like, how everyone is and I feel like I am always there even though we’re not near each other. In short, she is not simply a friend, she helps and shares with me in all matters, so you can say that she is my great companion, and no one can replace. I found my co-rememberer, so you found your co-rememberer.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Question
- For me, the thing I experience the most is « social needs » because this is one of the indispensable things in every person’s life. If « Physiological » is the essential in life, « social needs » is the mental necessity, and no one can live alone.
- In my opinion, I will change the position « Security » and « social needs » because I think that although health is one of the most important factors, if health is not good, we can have relationship good system. In particular, as in » The Fault in Our Starts » Hazel, although she is a cancer patient, she has a very beautiful affair with Augustus and her parents and friends to help her fight the disease. Moreover, the good relationships in society will help us overcome the suffering and difficulties in life.
- I am trying and improving myself in « Self-actualization », I want to be stronger at this level and then reach « Self-actualization ». At the level of « esteem », I am gradually developing to improve myself, especially confidence and respect. At the « Self-actualization » level, this is the highest level above the level, so we need to have careful preparation steps to reach this level. Therefore, a solid « Self-actualization » will be a good step for us to easily reach the highest level.
- The difference with animals is in « self-respect » because animals also need food, health and affection, but they are not aware of the level of « esteem ». This is a level to distinguish clearly between humans and animals, because animals can not understand the confidence, respect for others and respect for others. Often they only do so instinctively, not by their own perceptions
- I think John Green’s opinion is a new concept in this respect. However, I do not agree with this opinion, because it seems to be unfair to everyone. As far as I can see, the hierarchy in demand applies quite well to everyone and it can only be substituted for each other in a few separate perspectives. It’s true that part of John Green’s point of view is that it’s easier to do and perfect for the rich. For the poor, it will also be made just a little harder application to achieve at the highest level.
